Walmart to Expand Its Prepaid Card Lineup

New Walmart Prepaid CardsAs regular readers know, the Walmart Moneycard is one of our top rated prepaid credit cards. It has low fees and can be loaded with cash at any Walmart store. So we were excited to hear that Walmart announced it is expanding its lineup of prepaid cards. The big box retailer, in conjunction with Green Dot, will add three new cards to its product offerings–a Visa Gold MoneyCard, a MasterCard Family Edition MoneyCard and a MasterCard Bill Pay MoneyCard.

Mark Troughton, Green Dot’s President, Cards and Network, stated: “With the new Visa and MasterCard MoneyCards we have doubled the number of products offered through Walmart. This initiative is another example of how Green Dot, Walmart and GE continue to drive innovation in the prepaid industry with the goal of better serving customers and continuing to grow sales.”

These new cards are scheduled to roll out before the end of the year. The big question still unanswered is exactly what the new prepaid cards will offer. Walmart already has a a MasterCard Family Edition MoneyCard. With the Family Edition, you get a an extra card for free that a family member can use. And while the Bill Pay edition is new, Walmart does offer a bill pay service to its customers. With prices starting at $0.88, customers can pay their utility bills, cable, credit cards, and even mortgage at Walmart. But exactly how this service will be integrated into a prepaid card remains a mystery.

When Walmart releases more details on the new cards, we’ll let you know.
